UFT covers upholstery fibers and fabrics, identification and testing, furniture construction, cleaning chemistry, methods, protection, spotting and potential problems. Build your notes around how the course connects those areas. The paper exercise below checks an inspection record against a fully stated fictional policy.
What the UFT certification covers
The UFT demonstrates specific knowledge of upholstery fiber and fabric content, furniture construction, and the ability to identify limitations and potential cleaning-related problems on a given piece.
IICRC's own certification page lists the covered areas: upholstery fiber categories, fiber identification and testing, manufacturing of the fiber and fabric, the chemistry of cleaning, methods, protections, spotting, and potential problems. On achieving the certification, you show you understand fabric and fiber content and furniture construction and can spot limitations and potential cleaning-related problems on a piece of upholstery.

Prerequisites and the Master designation path
There are no prerequisites for the UFT certification, and you must hold it to earn either the Master Textile Cleaner or Master Fire and Smoke Restorer designation.
IICRC states plainly that no prerequisites exist for this certification. That removes a barrier if you are entering upholstery cleaning from another trade or directly from training.
The credential also carries forward: it is a required step toward the Master Textile Cleaner designation and the Master Fire and Smoke Restorer designation. If either advanced designation is on your career plan, UFT is on the mandatory path, not an optional extra.
One caution: no prerequisite certification does not mean no course requirement. The UFT is earned through an IICRC course and exam, offered live-stream or in person, so plan to complete the full course either way.

Exam format and retests
The published passing score is 75%. IICRC allows one initial attempt and up to two retests.
In-person candidates take the exam on the final course day. Candidates completing an available live-stream course use the IICRC Online Exam Portal. Online testing requires a supported desktop or laptop with a camera, microphone and internet connection; check the current portal requirements before testing.
The retest page gives 45 days from receipt of the IICRC Exam Notification. Your notification states your attempts and expiration date. Use that date; the FAQ pages also describe windows tied to course completion or scoring, so those different triggers should not be combined into a new deadline. After two unsuccessful retests, IICRC requires re-enrollment.
The public sources used here do not establish this certification's question count or time limit. Check the exam instructions for those details and confirm the applicable fee when registering.

Tested topics and how to study them
Study the scope areas named on the UFT page, and use the ANSI/IICRC S300 standard's published component list as background structure, while remembering neither document publishes exam questions or weights.
Turn the UFT scope statement into a study checklist: fiber categories; fiber identification and testing; fiber and fabric manufacturing; cleaning chemistry; cleaning methods; fabric protection; spotting; and potential cleaning-related problems. Add furniture construction and the ability to state a piece's limitations, both named in the certification's description of what you must demonstrate.
The related professional standard is useful orientation. The ANSI/IICRC S300 Standard for Professional Upholstery Cleaning, currently in its Second Edition (2025), describes components including fibers, construction, and styles; principles of professional upholstery cleaning; equipment and tools; pre- and post-cleaning inspections; methods and systems; leather cleaning; spot and stain removal; fabric protectors; and residential versus commercial maintenance. Reading it gives you the professional vocabulary around each UFT topic.
Two boundaries worth stating honestly. First, the S300 is a procedural standard that provides foundational principles; it does not attempt to teach comprehensive cleaning procedures, so it is background reading, not a training manual. Second, the standard's component list is not a published exam blueprint, and no retrieved IICRC page publishes question counts, weights, or a UFT-specific version number. Treat topic-by-topic depth questions as ones to raise with your IICRC Approved Instructor.
As a study method suggestion rather than a requirement: after each course module, write one sentence per scope area explaining what decision it informs on a real piece of furniture. If you cannot, that area is your review priority. Check the IICRC certification locator for available live-stream and in-person course dates before locking in your schedule.

A paper exercise: reviewing a pre-cleaning inspection record
This original exercise practices the record-completeness judgment behind pre-cleaning inspection, using a hypothetical company policy with every premise stated in the prompt.
S300 names pre-cleaning inspection, while the UFT page names fiber identification and testing and recognizing limitations and potential problems. This exercise uses a fictional company policy to practice checking a record. Its two-entry approval rule is not an IICRC requirement.
Practice exercise
CleanPro Services (a fictional company) has a written policy: a wet cleaning method may be approved for a piece only after the technician's inspection form records both (1) the identified fiber type and (2) the result of a dye-stability pre-test. A form for a velvet upholstered chair shows 'fabric: velvet upholstery' in the description field and 'no color transfer observed' in the pre-test field, but the fiber identification field is blank. Under CleanPro's stated policy, what is missing, and what must happen before the method is approved?
Show answer
The fiber identification result is missing. Under the stated policy, the method cannot be approved until fiber identification is completed and recorded on the form. The descriptive note 'velvet upholstery' does not satisfy the requirement, because the policy calls for an identified fiber type, and the pre-test entry covers only condition (2).
This is a record-completeness check against a rule given in the prompt. The policy lists two required entries; the form shows one of them filled and one blank, so the blank field is the gap. The practical habit it trains is checking that every required pre-inspection record exists before relying on it. In the real credential, fiber identification and testing are part of the published UFT scope, but the two-entry approval rule itself is an exercise premise, not an IICRC-published requirement.
